The Olympics and Human Nature

  • This last month, we have been watching the Winter Olympics. And I don’t know about you, but it has been absolutely insane to watch these young athletes. I mean, the competition is unbelievable. The athleticism boggles my mind. And we are on the edge of our seats watching these young athletes perform feats of physical strength and skill under unbelievable pressure.
  • I mean, my own heart is racing and my blood pressure is through the roof. And I’m not even the one on the slopes or skating on the ice. I mean, think about it. They’re out there and the whole world is watching. Their countries are are counting on them. And that’s what got me thinking. What if the Olympics were more than entertainment? What if they actually reveal something deep about the human heart? By the end of this episode, you’re going to see why the Olympics point to a battle that every one of us is in, and why I believe there is only
  • one champion who can actually win the battle for you and me. And once you see it, you’re never going to watch the Olympics the same way again. Before we jump in, quick reminder. • >> It’s taken eight to do it and these two legends of the sport are crashing it. >> She needs height. She needs distance. She needs extension. She needs everything. Kira Kamura big. Oh, and nailed it. Most people assume the Olympics started because the ancient Greeks loved sports. But the truth is the ancient Olympic games began in 776 BC before Christ in Olympia Greece primarily as a religious festival.
  • It wasn’t for the worship of the true god but it was the worship of the mythical god Zeus the king of the Greek gods. And the Olympics were basically a five-day religious festival. They there were sacrifices, there were hymns, there were rituals and athletic competitions. So it wasn’t just sports, it was worship, but it was also something else.
  • The Olympics were a panh helenic gathering. Pan means all and it was meaning to bring together all the Greek citystates and that mattered because those citystates were constantly fighting one another. So, the Olympics served as a cultural unifier, a kind of we may be rivals, but we’re all still Greeks.
