Stop Serving the Suggestion Box Jesus

  • Do you serve the suggestion box Jesus? You know, the Jesus who treats his commands just like suggestions, friendly advice, the Jesus who fits neatly into your comfort zone? Or do you serve the sovereign Savior, King? The Jesus who actually saves and rules because he loves you too much to just let you drift. I’m Kirk Cameron.
  • This is the Kirk Cameron Show. We’re talking about faith, family, politics, and pop culture, all through a biblical lens. So, if you want a closer walk with God and live courageously in confusing times, don’t forget to subscribe and then turn on notifications so you never miss an episode. Most people don’t reject Jesus outright.
  • Everybody loves Jesus. You know, you can you can give them a little little Jesus figurine and everyone usually says, “Thank you.” Muslims rever Jesus. Christians re revere Jesus. Just good moral people, spiritual people know that Jesus had the best kinds of principles. They don’t reject him. They just redefine him. We want a rescuer from sin, but not always a ruler over our weekends.
  • But listen to how scripture describes God’s rule. In Psalm 19, uh, starting at verse 7, he says, “The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living.
  • The reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true. Each one is fair. They’re more to be desired than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. They are a warning to your servant and a great reward to those who obey them.
  • That’s not the language of oppression. That’s the poetry of freedom. See, we have to understand that God gave us his law not to shackle us but to set us free. Because apart from his law, we will imprison ourselves in pride and in shame and in guilt. God wants to liberate us and shape us. Think about how he brought Israel out of Egypt.
  • Where did he take them? Into the wilderness and straight to Mount Si to show them how to live free. So when you think of God’s law, don’t imagine a courtroom and a judge and a jailer. Imagine a loving father teaching his children how to navigate a dangerous world. You see, the Ten Commandments weren’t written in cold ink. They were spoken by a father in love to his children.
  • They they tell us how life works best. how to love God, how to care for one another, how to stay whole and healthy in a broken, sick world. The scriptures say that God’s law revives the soul because it aligns your heart with reality. The testimonies of the Lord rejoice the heart because they keep you from self-destruction.
  • It enlightens the eyes because it helps you see what is truly good rather than the thing that you just think is good in a moment of weakness. His boundaries and barriers, they’re not bars on a cage. They’re guard rails on a mountain road so you don’t go careening off the cliff. They keep us safe while still letting us enjoy the breathtaking view.
