Will We Recognize Each Other in Heaven?

This summary draws on a comprehensive study of heaven, addressing frequently asked questions regarding the nature of eternity, the path to salvation, and life after resurrection. The core message emphasizes that heaven is a real, prepared destination available exclusively through faith in Jesus Christ. This study aims to make people not just “smart about heaven” but compelled to make their eternal “reservation”.

I. Securing Your Eternal Reservation: The Way to Heaven

The most critical truth about heaven is how to get there, as knowing the answers to all other questions “doesn’t anybody any good” if salvation is lacking.

The Singular Path Through Christ

Jesus Christ provided the explicit way to heaven, declaring: “I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the father except through me”.

  • Acceptance is Key: The way to go to heaven is by accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. This involves praying and asking Jesus Christ to come and live within their life and forgive their sin.
  • The Gift of Eternal Life: When people receive Christ as their Savior, the Bible says He gives them the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • Making the Reservation: If one wishes to be in heaven, they need to make their reservation.

Baptism and Prerequisites

It is crucial to understand that baptism is not required in order to get into heaven.

  • This is proven by the thief on the cross: Jesus told him, “Today you will be in paradise with me,” without requiring baptism.
  • Baptism is recognized as an important act of obedience, but it is not a part of salvation and is not a requirement for heaven.

II. Life in the Glorified State: Bodies, Recognition, and Relationships

Questions about what eternal life will look and feel like are common, particularly concerning recognition and relationships.

Recognition and the Resurrection Body

Believers will receive brand new resurrection heavenly bodies.

  • The Bible states in Philippians that our lowly bodies will become like the risen body of Christ.
  • We will be able to know each other.
  • Biblical Evidence: This recognition is supported by the fact that Jesus was known by everybody after His resurrection, and the Old Testament figures Moses and Elijah were recognizable on the Mount of Transfiguration.

Family and Marriage

Family bonds will continue, but in a heightened, glorified state.

  • Granddaughter Relationship: A granddaughter will still be a granddaughter, and family relationships will still exist, but they will be “so much beyond anything we can imagine”.
  • Marriage Change: Marriage will not be the same in heaven. The Bible says that when we get to heaven, “we’re going to be like the angels neither marrying nor giving in marriage”.
  • Focus on Christ: Our relationship with Jesus is going to be so overwhelming that even the joys of marriage will pale in significance to it.

Children and Free Will

God created everyone with a free will and the opportunity to receive His Son.

  • Babies and Children: Babies will absolutely go to heaven. Until a child reaches the age of accountability (where they can understand the gospel and know the difference between good and evil), they are protected under the blood of Christ.
  • Free Will in Heaven: Believers will have free will in heaven, but it will be within the will of God. It won’t be free will to do anything outside of God’s will because believers will all be perfect and walking in holiness.
  • Age in Heaven: The Bible does not explicitly state what age people will be in heaven, though some speculate ages 30 or 33. It is expected that there will be people of all ages because the Millennium (a preview of heaven) mentions little children playing with the animals.

III. The Environment of Eternity: City, Worship, and Work

Heaven is described as a vast, beautiful, and active environment.

The City and Its Appearance

Heaven’s capital city is the Holy City.

  • Pearly Gates: We will absolutely get to enter through the pearly gates. The Bible says the gates are all made out of a pearl. God can make a pearl any way He wants, and each gigantic gate will be one pearl.
  • Streets of Gold: The streets are absolutely paved with gold. It is a certain kind of translucent gold that is so pure you can actually see through it.
  • Mansions: We will have our own homes in heaven, as Jesus promised, “In my father’s house are many mansions”. Sharing will not be an issue.

Worship and Service

Worship is a central activity in heaven.

  • Worship Leader: The only person expected to retain a job on a pastor’s staff in heaven is the worship leader, as believers are going to do a lot of worshiping.
  • Crescendo of Worship: The Book of Revelation provides a picture of seven hymns in heaven, which are crescendoed, building up like a big song.
  • Service: Believers are going to serve Jesus in heaven. This service will be without difficulty and without limitation. Work will be a joy and not a hardship.

The Role of Animals

There will be animals in heaven.

  • This is evidenced by the fact that Jesus is described as riding a white horse out of heaven.
  • However, specific individual pets, such as “your animals,” will probably not be in heaven.

New Heaven and Earth

The Bible indicates that God will renovate this earth.

  • Many believe the earth will be destroyed, but God intends to “burn the dross and the ugly things up and recreate it” according to His purpose.
  • It will still be the same earth and still be the same heaven.

IV. Knowledge, Memory, and Perspective

Spiritual maturity and knowledge will be vastly different in eternity.
