Trusting God When the Outcome Still Hurts
-
Hey friends, welcome back to the Life and Leadership Podcast and I am so glad that you’re here. It means the world to me that you keep showing up, following, subscribing, and sharing these episodes with your friends. And hey, if you post about the podcast on social media, be sure to tag Christine Kane and Propel Women.
-
We love seeing how God is using these conversations to inspire and equip you on your leadership journey. Now, I am really honored today because today’s guest is my dear friend Lisa Turkst. Lisa is the president and chief visionary officer of Proverbs 31 Ministries, and she’s the author of seven, I want you to hear that, seven New York Times best-selling books.
-
Her latest, I want to trust you, but I don’t, dives deep into how we move forward when doubt wants to hold us back. So, you know, I am so allin for this conversation. And I’ve got to tell you, I’ve read every single one of Lisa’s books, and she’s the kind of author that I go back to time and time again cuz her books are just so rich, and um I value her so dearly as a friend. So, let’s dive right in today.
-
Okay, my friend, I am so glad that you’re finally on the podcast. I know it’s taken us a minute just to get both of our schedules together, but what a joy to see your beautiful face. It’s always such a privilege to spend time with you, Chris. I know. Same.
-
Same. I think last time I was with you at your place in North Carolina. And I I need to know, have you taken up surfing now that you’re kind of in Florida a little bit? Okay. Funny you should ask. So, my husband is a big time surfer. We got married um a year ago in January. So, uh we we’re getting to be old hat at this marriage thing now. Um but he’s a big-time surfer.
-
like we go to Nicaragua and do missions work down there, but it’s always a double trip because he also likes to surf the the big waves there as well. So, yeah, he’s a big-time surfer. I’m not I am still terrified of the ocean. Every now and then I’ll jump in just so I can say I did, but pretty much I’d rather be on a boat floating on the ocean or riding on the ocean than on a surfboard in the ocean.
-
I I I got to say when I first met Chaz in New York when we went to Shel’s uh dinner um for her birthday, I I burst out laughing cuz I mean he’s literally a surface like legit surfer. He knew about Australia the whole thing. I freaked out. And then it’s you which is great. Okay. I I want to dive in. I mean people know how much I love you and I mean we’ve been friends way back from Women of Faith like so for over well over a decade now.
-
And um when we used to do you remember that time when we were doing a world vision promotion at Women of Faith? Oh, how could I ever forget it? Can you just share that moment? This is what bonded us for life. Bonded us for life. So basically at that time uh women of faith when you were a speaker you also helped talk about the sponsors from the stage which is actually really cool because we really believed in the sponsor.
-
So that was all great but I this was one of my first women of faith events. I was not familiar with with the world vision pitch because I I um usually work with compassion. They’re both amazing organizations. So I said before I went out there like I don’t know any of the information and they were like it’s fine.
-
All you have to do is carry packets out there. Um the other speakers Kane and who was the other one? Was it Priscilla or Lisa Hara? Maybe. I think Lisa. Yes. Okay. I distinctly remember it was Chris because we get up on stage. I’m holding the tote bags. I do not have the information cards. Chris has the cards. Yes, I do. Somehow Chris gets moved in the spirit.
-
Decides to take the phone from me to walk into the audience to hand out the packets and the spotlight is on me. She hands me the microphone. I know zero information. And so I thought, I’ve got to kill time before Chris like finishes getting moved in the spirit and hands out.
-
Chris has got to come back on stage and give the pitch because I don’t have the information. So, I’m standing there in front of 10,000 women. The spotlight’s on me. The microphone’s in my hand. And I think, okay, I’m just going to say a few things that I can relate to what it feels like to be a child who needs support. So, that’s what I intended to say. Like, when I was young, you know, I I my dad abandoned our family, blah, blah, blah.
-
But what came out of my mouth is I too used to be one of these children. And when I said that leadin line, the audience gasped, gasped and suddenly I realized everyone thinks that I was a World Vision sponsored child and I can’t I can’t rein it in like the train has left the station. So I just keep going like and it was hard and I didn’t know what to do and meanwhile Barry who was off stage comes running center stage and starts doing the mark to like stop Lisa stop but I couldn’t.
-
Have you ever pan had panic speak syndrome? That’s what I was having. I was panic speaking and to this day 10,000 women out there think that I was a sponsored child and we have more kids sponsored that day than ever before. Literally because of you. Okay. So, if you were in the audience that day, I apologize. That was a panic lie.
-
It was not an intentional lie. It was hilarious. I think people be laughing going, “Oh my gosh, uh that happened.” And I love us to be honest. I’ll never forget that as long as I live. Um I I could cry laughing now and my team’s laughing here. But anyway, we will go on. Okay. Um I’m panic lying. Panic. Is that a thing? Well, it was for me that day. Obviously, it was for me.
-
I Okay, I want to say like we’ve been friends a long time and really why I wanted you here and number one, you’re a brilliant leader. This is life and leadership. So, it’s the integration of everything, you know. Um here we don’t talk about five leadership points.
