I invite you to turn with me to Psalm 13, which in our Bibles is often titled “How Long, O Lord?” I will read it, and then we will explore it together.

Psalm 13: To the choirmaster, a Psalm of David.

“How long, O Lord, will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; lest my enemies say, ‘I have prevailed over him,’ lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken. But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me.” Amen.

Father, help us now as we study the Bible, that our thoughts and my words may align with your plans and purposes for us, as we turn from ourselves to you. We pray in Christ’s name, Amen.

Some of you may have joined us since we began, which is understandable given the nature of today. As we gathered, I mentioned that I had planned to continue studying from the previous week, which I have enjoyed and benefited from. We’ve been working through 1 Samuel, and the early chapters of this book, though just beginning, are foundational for what follows. Since, as you can see, our morning congregation today is much smaller than usual, I realized that if I continued with 1 Samuel, I would leave at least 50 or 60 percent of the congregation with a significant gap in the study—a key piece of the puzzle.
