The Saks Fifth Avenue Jesus

  • Do you follow the Saks Fifth Avenue Jesus? You know, the one who delivers all your golden dreams, fulfills your wish list, and makes your life sparkle like a holiday window display. Problem is, that’s not the real Jesus. He’s not a department store savior handing out shopping bags of blessings. He’s your sovereign savior, king.
  • And he gives you something far better. Peace of mind, a clear conscience, and a faith that moves mountains. Welcome to the Kirk Cameron Show where we look for truth, courage, and faith in everyday life. • Life really is about where you look and to whom you look for your satisfaction. Think about it. The direction of your life is determined by what you tell yourself will finally make you content and happy. We all have an if only. If only I had this, I would just be so thankful. I would finally be content. If only I had this and she would give me the one thing I’m asking for or he would would understand and provide the one thing that means most to me.
  • Then I’ll be happy. So what is that for you? What sits on the other side of your if only? We’re all dreamers. God made us that way. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I think God gave us imagination. But when sin and selfishness hijacks those dreams, those dreams can capture our heart and that’s when everything goes sideways.
  • What starts out as a desire can very easily become a demand. Once you start to demand it, it now feels like a non-negotiable need. And if a person doesn’t give you what you think you absolutely need and deserve, you begin to judge them. And then you will punish them. Believe me, I know. I’m guilty of it.
  • And then suddenly all the joy leaks out of your life. Not because God has failed you, but because your dream has started to rule you. Think about it. You’re not miserable because life’s unfair. You’re miserable because the dream that you built your hope on is somehow out of your reach. and you’re wondering why God won’t give it to you.
  • You’ve started envying other people who seem to have your dream. And you wonder, “Why has God forgotten about me? Does he care about me at all?” And your dream has quietly taken over God’s throne in your heart. That’s when the Saks Fifth Avenue Jesus shows up. The version of Jesus that we invent who’s supposed to deliver the goods.
  • If he does, we worship. If he doesn’t, we question his goodness. And we reduce the Lord of glory to a personal delivery system for our wish list. Okay, let’s pause here and anchor this in scripture in Matthew chapter 6, starting at verse 19. Don’t store up treasures here on earth where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.
  • Here’s your Sachs Fifth Avenue and all of its goods. Store your treasures in heaven where moths and rust cannot destroy and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will be also. Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light.
