Hang on to that for a minute. Abundance out of barness. What a good God. [Music] Welcome back to the NIV Application Bible podcast. By the way, thank y’all. Thank you so much for carving the time out of your schedules. I know you’re busy. We don’t take it for granted that y’all spend this time with us. Just thank you. means the world to us.

We couldn’t do what we do without y’all. We are in the book of 1 Samuel. So, we’re about a thousand years before the birth of Christ, his incarnate ministry. This is the end of the period of the judges, and we’re going into the season of the prophets with God’s people in this redemptive narrative.
-
And the very beginning of 1 Samuel has a story about a chick I wildly identify with. You’ll figure out why in just a second. I’m going to start from the top. This is 1st Samuel chapter 1 verse one. There was a certain man from Ramotham, a Zuite. Doesn’t that sound cool? I’d love to be a Zuite. From the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was was Elca, son of Gerro, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, son of Zeus, an Ephraimite.
-
He had two wives. I know that probably took your attention. Remember, polygamy is the norm back then. He had two wives. One was called Hannah. Yay. The other Panina. Ooh, you’ll know why in a minute. Panina had children, but Hannah had none. Year after year, this man Elca went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh, where Hoffne and Phineas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord.
-
Whenever the day came for Elca to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Pineina, and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah, he gave a double portion. and the Lord had closed her womb. I don’t know about you, but I love the idea of a double portion of food when I’m sad because that’s usually when I carbo load.
-
Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival Panina kept provoking her in order to irritate her. This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. Her husband Elca would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than 10 sons?” I love this application point right here.
-
When have you come to God in prayer and deep anguish? And what was the outcome? Have you ever had a panina? Somebody who provoked you year after year prompted you to anguish. Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.
