God Had to Break Moses Before He Could Use Him

  • In the name of Jesus, your son, and in the power of your spirit, for your glory and your honor and your name’s sake. Amen. Amen. If you have your Bibles, open them to Exodus chapter 2. And here we look at the second phase in this sort of four-part transition in Moses’s life. This transition from being this sort of prince in Egypt to being a leader of the Exodus.
  • this transition that takes a number of years and that takes a rather winding road. And here today we look at chapter 2 verses 16 through 22. And this section is a very important section. Although when you read it, the importance of it could go unnoticed. Let’s look at it. Now we read, “Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.
  • The shepherds came and drove them away. But Moses stood up and saved them and watered their flock.” When they came home to their father Ruel, he said, “How is it that you have come home so soon today?” They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and even drew water for us and watered our flock.
  • ” He said to his daughters, “Then where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him that he may eat bread.” And Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses his daughter, Zapora. She gave birth to a son, and he called his name Gersham, for he said, “I have been a sojourer in a foreign land.” Amen.
  • Simple enough passage of scripture, but a passage of scripture that is incredibly weighty. It’s weighty in terms of its value to us to understand this transition. This transition from a man in Egypt of much privilege and much power to a man who leads the Exodus. And the question that it raises and then answers is how does God equip and prepare a man for service and leadership? That’s the important question.
