God Establishes All Authorities
-
Hey, remember when you were a little kid and you were told things like, “Sit still.” I don’t know about you, but I could not sit still. Or, “Make sure you do this.” Or your parents would say, “Uh, these are the chores that you need to do.” And um whatever the rule might have been, uh you were keenly responsible uh for that rule.
-
You understood that I need to get this done. Dad’s going to be coming home soon, right? And uh we would get that done. The motive was, I don’t want to get in trouble, so I’m going to do this. Well, listen. Governments work very much the same way like that. Governments make laws that keep us as a culture in line.
-
We may not like them, but it’s best that we do them. It’s best that we obey the law, as it were, right? So we don’t get out of line with both God and government because uh that would be sin. It would be disobedience. It would be lawb breakaking and God does not want us to do that.
-
We do not normally warm up to authority. Even that is a witness of our fallen nature. But God has established not only external laws but internal rules that he’s placed within our hearts. Friends, it’s not so much of what’s posted on the side of the road that matters. That only exposes what’s in the heart. Will you obey what God commands through even government? Well, let’s get ready and find out as we dive into our study today as we look at what it means to see that God is the one who has established the authorities.
-
So, let’s dive in. Verse two, it says, “Therefore, whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.” Boom. Period. Just a tremendous statement. If you resist God-given authority, you are going to bring judgment upon yourself and it’s not going to go well with you.
