What Does the Bible Say About Women Preachers? A Biblical Perspective

Today, I want to address a significant topic that has been widely debated online—one that I find myself in the middle of. I don’t believe in giving short or incomplete answers, as that often leads to further confusion. Instead, I want to take this opportunity to provide a thorough biblical response regarding the role of women as preachers. By the time we finish, I believe you will have a clear understanding of what the Word of God consistently teaches on this matter.

To begin, let’s turn to 1 Corinthians 14:33-35:

“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.”

This passage is direct and unambiguous. The Bible clearly states that it is improper for a woman to speak in church. This is not a cultural suggestion—it is a divine command. The word “improper” in the original Greek is “aischros”, which translates to disgraceful or shameful. This same term appears in 1 Corinthians 11:6 and Ephesians 5:12, where it is again used to describe actions that are considered dishonorable.

Despite the clarity of Scripture, the issue of women preaching has become highly controversial today. However, one divine statement settles the question: “It is improper for a woman to speak in church.” This is not open to interpretation. The Holy Spirit carefully chose the word “disgraceful” to emphasize the seriousness of this command.
