I still remember when I was 21 years old, and I traveled to Thessaloniki. At that time, we were running a shelter there for rescued girls. I’ll never forget what one of those girls told me—it was heartbreaking.
She had been trafficked from North Africa to Istanbul. She was crammed into a shipping container with 60 other girls. Tragically, the oxygen system failed during the journey. When authorities opened the container, 30 of the girls had suffocated to death.
Imagine the trauma of surviving something so horrific.
And it didn’t end there. When the container arrived in Istanbul, men dressed in law enforcement uniforms took the surviving girls. They were traffickers. These men raped the girls repeatedly, locked them in tiny apartments with barely any food or water, stripped them of their dignity—and their documents—and then put them on a small boat headed to Athens.
When the boat approached the Greek coast, the traffickers saw the Greek Coast Guard nearby. To avoid getting caught, they threw the girls overboard.
