Restoring America’s Glory – A Moral Compass of Christian Values

America is facing a severe crisis rooted not merely in politics or economics, but in a profound moral and spiritual decline. This trajectory mirrors the history of ancient Israel, which lost its glory after forgetting its heritage and abandoning the Lord. The sources warn that unless something changes, historians may one day write about “The Rise and Fall of the American Empire”.

The fundamental problem is the loss of a fixed standard of right and wrong. This condition, echoing the time in Israel when “every man did that which was right in his own eyes” because “there was no king in Israel,” has paved the way for societal compromise and grim consequences.

The Glorious Heritage: A Nation Founded on Christian Principles

Like ancient Israel, which was given a promised land flowing with milk and honey, America was founded upon a glorious heritage and has been exceptionally blessed by God.

The founders made it clear that the nation’s foundation was intrinsically Christian:

• Patrick Henry, a founder, stated that “America was founded not by religionists, but by Christians. Not upon religions, but upon the Gospel of Jesus Christ”.
• George Washington, in his first official act, took the entire Senate and House of Representatives to a two-hour worship service. He declared that “No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States”. He affirmed that “every step by which they have advanced… seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency,” meaning “God did it”.

This past was marked by glorious conquest. However, this heritage was forgotten by the people, who defied the Law, denied the Lord, and defiled the land.

The Gradual Compromise: The Erosion of Moral Authority

The sources highlight that America has undergone a “cultural revolution,” starting in the sixties, and is now “reaping the bitter fruit of that revolution”. This decline is characterized by a “gradual compromise”.

The Vanishing of Moral Absolutes

A new generation has arisen “which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which He had done for Israel”. This spiritual ignorance leads directly to the collapse of fixed moral standards.

• Public Opinion Shift: In 1960, approximately 65% of the American public believed the Bible was the “authentic, inerrant Word of God”. By 1992, that number had dropped to only 32%.
• Rejection of Absolutes: In a 1992 Gallup survey, 70% of American respondents said “there are no moral absolutes”.
• Church Compromise: Even among Evangelical Christians surveyed, only 57% believed in fixed standards of right and wrong.
• Moral Ambivalence: This shift leads to “moral ambivalence,” where people “call evil good and good evil”. This is aided and abetted by educators teaching “values clarification,” emphasizing that there are “no right or wrong answers” in moral situations.

Accommodating the “Canaanites” (Sins of Compromise)

The compromise of Israel came through failing to drive out the Canaanites as commanded. This failure manifests in three ways today:

1. Canaanites They Feared (Accommodation): These are overwhelming sins like drugs, crime, immorality, and sexual perversion. Because these issues seem too strong, society accommodates itself to them, rationalizing, “We can’t do anything about them, they have chariots of iron”. The resulting mindset is to “help them to do it safely”.
2. Canaanites They Favored (Exploitation of Vice): These are vices the nation chooses to put “to tribute” for profit. Gambling, or legalized wagering, is favored because governments seek to profit from the vices of people. This is rotten at the core because real business is win-win, but gambling is based on win-lose. Trafficking in vice is likened to a pimp pandering to lower instincts for money.
3. Canaanites They Fellowshipped (Spiritual Assimilation): This occurs when believers become so accustomed to sinful ways that they no longer seem sinful. Rather than driving out the enemy, they became friends with the world. “Friendship with the world is enmity with God”. The danger is thinking that a “little sin’s not so bad” and that one can control the situation.

The Grim Consequences: Loss of Protection

The result of this compromise is grim consequences. When Israel disobeyed, God said, “I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you”.

The fundamental consequence is that the God who has protected us has withdrawn His protection.

• Self-Judgment: God does not have to judge; He simply has to “let us have our own way”.
• Societal Collapse: This self-judgment is evident in dramatic social deterioration over the past 30 years: violent crime has increased more than 500%; the divorce rate has quadrupled; teen suicides have doubled.
• Sexual Decay: Promiscuity leads to disease, divorce, abortion, and misery. Currently, 56 million Americans suffer from some form of venereal disease, and more than one-third of all births are to women without husbands (reaching 80% illegitimacy in the inner city).
• Removal of God’s Word: The Ten Commandments have been removed from classroom walls, despite James Madison stating that the “entire future of the American civilization” was staked on the ability to govern ourselves according to the Ten Commandments. The consequence of rejecting the King is that the “thorns” and “snares” take over, and the “scream of the great American eagle has become the twitter of a frightened sparrow”.
