Live In-Depth Holy Spirit Seminar

The comprehensive teaching by David Diga Hernandez on the Holy Spirit emphasizes that the Spirit is not merely an “it,” a force, or a feeling, but a distinct, divine person who desires deep relationship and governs the supernatural life of the believer. Understanding the Holy Spirit’s personality is foundational; if one views the Holy Spirit as an “it,” they will attempt to use Him, but recognizing Him as a person leads one to say, “Holy Spirit use me“.

The mission of this teaching is to move beyond superficial information, providing revelation and deep deposits of truth concerning the person of the Holy Spirit.

1. The Deity and Personality of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, distinct from the Father and the Son, yet equal in divinity. This truth is foundational and demonstrated throughout scripture.

The Personhood of the Spirit

When the sources define the Holy Spirit as a person, it means He possesses personal attributes, though He is not mortal, physical, or human.

  • He Speaks: The Holy Spirit has a voice and communicates, such as when He told Philip to walk alongside the carriage. He can be ignored.
  • He Has a Will: The Spirit divides gifts to every man “severally as he will,” showing He acts according to His own intention. He can be resisted.
  • He Has Feelings: The Bible explicitly tells believers not to grieve the Holy Spirit. Disobedience makes Him sad, while obedience brings Him joy. A sincere Christian cannot go on in compromise and be happy, as they will sense the grieving of the Spirit.
  • He Desires Fellowship: Scripture mentions the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Fellowship implies communion, conversation, familiarity, and friendship. If He desires fellowship, He can be rejected.
  • He Abides: The Holy Spirit is a faithful friend who is present in all seasons—joy, sorrow, victory, defeat, big things, and little things. When a believer makes a mistake, the Holy Spirit does not leave or “flutter away,” but abides to help the believer correct their path by convicting them when they are wrong.

The Divinity of the Spirit

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son, possessing the omni-attributes of God.

  • Omniscience (All-Knowing): The Holy Spirit searches out everything and knows God’s deep secrets; He knows the mind, thoughts, and will of the Father.
  • Omnipotence (All-Powerful): The Holy Spirit brings with Him the power of the Most High.
  • Omnipresence (Everywhere at All Times): Believers can never escape or get away from the Spirit’s presence.
  • Lordship: The Holy Spirit is referred to as the Lord. Cross-referencing Isaiah 6 and Acts 28 shows that it was the person of the Holy Spirit speaking to Isaiah the prophet.

2. The Powerful Ministry of the Holy Spirit

The purpose of the power received when the Holy Spirit comes upon a believer is proclamation—soul winning, ministry work, and Kingdom expansion.

Heaven’s Greatest Evangelist

The Holy Spirit is the one who convicts the world of its sin (refusing to believe in Jesus), righteousness (available because Jesus returned to the Father), and judgment (the ruler of this world is already judged).

  • The Holy Spirit works on the heart and is the power behind the Gospel message; only the Holy Spirit can draw someone into the light.
  • Carnal efforts, emotional pleading, or pressure tactics cannot produce spiritual results; believers present the Gospel, and the Holy Spirit will persuade.

Masterful Teacher and Revealer of Truth

The Holy Spirit is sent as the Advocate (representative of the Father) to teach believers everything and remind them of all Jesus taught.

  • Two-Fold Job: He reminds (the sayings of Jesus) and reveals (any other truth needed).
  • Source of Revelation: Faithfulness to receive the Word is essential because the Word is the substance with which the Holy Spirit builds spiritual life. The Holy Spirit (the author of the book) sits alongside the believer as they study, providing divine revelation.
  • Transformation: Information informs; revelation transforms. The Spirit confirms the truth of the Gospel at its foundational level.

Mighty Intercessor and Helper in Weakness

The Holy Spirit helps believers in their weakness, particularly in prayer.

  • Praying for You: When believers do not know what God wants them to pray for, the Holy Spirit prays for them. This prayer comes from deep within, as the Spirit dwells in the believer.
  • Fervency and Precision: The Spirit prays with groanings (passion and zeal) that cannot be expressed in words. He prays precise, perfected, tailor-made prayers, constantly.

Glorifying Jesus and Affirming Identity

The Holy Spirit is the one who makes Jesus real by testifying all about Him.

  • Jesus-Centered Ministry: Anything that is Spirit-filled will be Jesus-centered; the Holy Spirit’s power will always point to Jesus.
  • Manifested Presence: The Holy Spirit intensifies the reality of Christ through the Word and through worship. The manifested presence of God is the believer’s awareness of Him.
  • Affirming Identity: The Holy Spirit joins with the believer’s spirit to affirm that they are God’s children. The struggle with the flesh is proof the believer belongs to God, as the Holy Spirit is within them, fighting for holiness.
  • Source of Boldness: The Holy Spirit provides boldness, a spiritual trait demonstrated by Peter, who went from denying Christ three times to winning 3,000 souls at Pentecost.
