LUKE CAMERON Shares His POWERFUL Testimony & Adoption Story

Luke Cameron, founder and president of the nonprofit organization Together is One, shares his powerful adoption story and the divine inspiration behind his ministry dedicated to adoption grant assistance. Together is One focuses on helping eligible adoptive families afford the adoption process by connecting them with essential resources and support necessary to create forever homes for children in need.

The Unconventional Start: Luke Cameron’s Adoption Story

Luke detailed the complex circumstances surrounding his biological origins, which led to his adoption by Kirk and Chelsea Cameron.

His birth mother was married to a man who was incarcerated for child pornography and drugs. While her husband was in jail, the 18-year-old birth mother had a one-night stand, resulting in Luke’s conception. When she sought help, the biological father denied responsibility, claiming the pregnancy wasn’t his, and moved away from the situation.

Seeking counsel from her incarcerated husband, the birth mother was told the child was not his and was given an ultimatum: she must abort the child, or if she kept the child, he would abuse the child and “not treat him like it’s my own”. Kirk Cameron noted that in this situation, two men dropped the ball by failing to take care of the child.

Ultimately, Luke’s birth mother made the courageous decision not to abort him, but instead placed him up for adoption. This decision allowed the Camerons to adopt Luke, who expressed profound thankfulness that God placed him into their family.

Navigating the Challenges of Identity for Adoptees

While Luke grew up knowing he was adopted—a common reality in the Cameron household, as Kirk, his mother, and several siblings are also adopted—the difficult details of his origin story were not known until he was older.

Luke learned around the age of 13 or 14 that he was not biologically his parents’ child. He accessed his adoption file to learn the full story of his birth mother and birth father. He noted that this period was “hard and challenging” as he struggled to figure out his identity.

Luke believes that questions of identity“Who am I? What am I created to do? What am I created for?”—are honestly one of the biggest and most common challenges for adoptees and foster care kids. Growing up, he faced struggles and temptations (such as drinking or smoking) as he tried to figure out who he was. He also wrestled with the fear of being “destined to end up like my birth father,” wondering if the path of sin was “in me”.

Finding Fixed Identity in Christ

Luke credits his parents for raising him and his siblings with a strong foundation being on God. He realized that identity is situational based on where one is born or where they came from. To truly know who he was, Luke recognized he needed to seek God first and foremost and acknowledge, “God, you created me, I’m your son or I’m your daughter”.

He concluded that one’s identity must be in Christ, not in external factors like athletic skills, career achievements, or the lineage of biological or adoptive parents. Luke analogized finding his identity to completing a large puzzle: he laid down the final piece when he surrendered and said, “Lord, I’m going to lay down that last piece of the puzzle” and trusted God with the whole picture. This surrender helped him stop asking painful questions to his birth parents about why they made the decisions they did.

Luke emphasizes that he received great value knowing that he has been “bought with a deep price” by Christ. He directly cites 1 Corinthians 6:20: “For you have been bought with a price therefore glorify God with your body,” as an affirmation of his worth.

Adoption as God’s Plan A: A Biblical Perspective

The source material repeatedly emphasizes that adoption holds a central place in God’s heart and is a “real gift”. Kirk Cameron explained that many people mistakenly view adoption as a “Plan B” if they cannot have biological children. However, the Bible shows adoption as “Plan A”.

  • Jesus was adopted by Joseph, His earthly father.
  • Moses was adopted.
  • All believers are adopted into Christ. This spiritual adoption represents a new beginning (“born again”) and allows individuals to break “sin chains” inherited from their natural biological family.

The Benefits of Adoption and Lessons for Fatherhood

Luke highlighted that the benefits of adoption included having a second chance at life, being raised in a Christian home, receiving education, and having a family that loved him. He acknowledged that without being adopted into his current home, he likely would not have had the resources or opportunities to accomplish things like starting his ministry, Together is One.

As an adopted child, Luke expressed that the experience taught him the importance of patience. He wants to carry this patience into his future role as a father, especially recognizing that adopted children, particularly those with disabilities or those who may not have been “the easiest kid growing up,” require immense patience, counsel, and love through difficult times.
