Psalm 2: The War Between God and the Nations – A Reflection for the Church
If you have your Bibles, turn to Psalm 2. In this passage, the psalmist describes a battle between God and the nations, and between God and sinful people. Psalm 2 opens with these words: “Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers gather together against the Lord and His Anointed One. They say, ‘Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.’”
But in response, “He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. Then He rebukes them in His anger and terrifies them in His wrath, saying, ‘I have installed my King on Zion, my holy mountain.’”
God continues: “I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.’”
