Nancy Guthrie and the Super Bowl

  • This past weekend, we watched the Super Bowl. And [music] for me and my family, it was another heartbreaking year because we are huge Buffalo Bills fans. My wife’s from Buffalo. We got married in Buffalo. We are part of the Bills Mafia. And we almost made it again. And I’ll tell you this thing, we were even there [music] back in the Jim Kelly days with Thurman Thomas and Bruce Smith and Andre Reid when the Bills [music] made it to the Super Bowl four times and never won the title.
  • I mean, that that’s the kind of pain that never leaves you. I remember Scott Norwood, wide right, all the jokes. It it just becomes part of the family testimony like we have endured, we have survived, we have buil. But here’s the question I want to ask. What happens when a people begin to make their favorite professional sports their religion? Because there’s a difference between enjoying football or basketball or soccer and worshiping football, basketball or soccer.
  • So, here’s my promise to you. By the end of this episode, I’m going to give you a simple test. Three questions you can ask yourself to know whether sports is a gift in your life or a full-blown idol. And I’m going to show you what you can do about it without becoming weird. And hey, if you enjoy these conversations about faith, family, culture, and the Bible, please subscribe to this channel.
  • Also, I’ve got an email newsletter where we send out updates uh for new episodes, resources, behind the scenes stuff. So, I’ll put the link below. And if you would just sign up, I would love it because we’re trying to build a huge community of people who want to live courageously with clarity and with joy. All right. Now, let me be clear.
  • I am not anti-OT. I love football actually. I love the grit. I love the teamwork. I love the strategy. I love how it pulls my whole family together. I love the strength and the athleticism is amazing. And I actually think that sports can be something good for kids to be involved with done rightly and it can reflect something good and true about the world that God made.
