Texas Flood: Heartbreak, Heroism, and Honest Faith
brought to you by America’s Christian Credit Union. Next, I I want to talk with you about the devastating, tragic, heartbreaking flood in Texas that claimed the lives of little children wrecked homes buried in enti entire communities. And I want to also talk about the beautiful, inspiring stories that came out of that tragedy.
stories of heroes, moms and dads and first responders and others who risked their lives and even laid down their lives to save others. James, let’s roll a video. Right now, there are at least 111 confirmed deaths across central Texas, including the 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic. There are more than 160 people believed to be missing, including five Camp Mystic campers and one counselor.
It’s just beyond heartbreaking. It is terrifying for many of us to even imagine what these families are going through and what what the children and the counselors and the elderly were feeling and thinking as all of this came crashing through their cabins along that river in the middle of the night. And questions like, “Where was God in the middle of this? Why did he let this happen? Where are these children now? Are they in heaven? This was a little Christian camp for children.
How do we wrestle with these questions as the family of faith? But we’ve also seen stories of hope and heroism like a dad swimming with his child on his shoulders. uh people linking arms and forming human chains out into the floodwaters to rescue people. Ordinary people risking their own safety doing extraordinary things.
And this isn’t just Texas strong. We’re witnessing the image of God in action. I believe it’s critically important that we’re always honest with our fears and that we face them. And one of the questions we have to ask is where is God in the midst of a tragedy like this? Did he know? Was he able? Did he care? At this moment, we must go not to the whatifs, but to the what is? And what is true about God? We find in the scriptures Psalm 34 verse 18, the Lord is close to the brokenhearted.
