The Secret to Walking Daily in the Holy Spirit’s Power

  • You know, so often when we hear a title like that, how to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, something deep within us immediately feels, well, it feels a little impoverished, a little lacking. We hear the words power and we think of something dramatic, something overwhelming, something that belongs to a different class of Christian.
  • We look at our own lives, at the mundane moments, at the quiet struggles, at the places where we feel we failed again and again, and we think that that power is for someone else. It’s for the preacher. It’s for the missionary in a faroff land. It’s for the saint who has it all figured out. And so, we come to a meeting like this, and our silent, desperate prayer is, “Oh God, if only you would give me more of your spirit.
  • If only you would pour out what I am so clearly missing. If only I could get what they have. Oh my dear friend, can I just stop everything right now and tell you something? That very feeling, that very sense of longing is based on a foundation that isn’t true. It’s a lie that has crippled the church and left countless believers sitting on the sidelines of their own inheritance, begging for a penny when they are heirs to the entire kingdom.
  • You see, walking in the power of the Holy Spirit is not first and foremost about getting something. It is about realizing what you already have. It is about acknowledging a position that is already yours in Christ Jesus. Let me take you to the word in Ephesians the first chapter. Oh, it’s glorious. Paul is writing to ordinary believers, people just like you and me, and he’s listing out the incredible, boundless spiritual blessings that are ours in Christ.
  • And he gets to verse 13, and he says this, “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal.” A seal? What is the seal? He tells us the promised Holy Spirit who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance. Do you hear what he did not say? He did not say if you fast for 40 days you will be marked with a seal.
